That last panel took a long time. The contraptions in the distance are Crescian Firelopers. They're the fiercest construct tech on the continent right now, built both to decimate land forces and to pick Aldish vliegeng riders out of the sky. They will ruin your day.

If I could draw your attention to the enemy hounds in the last panel, they are Kickstarter cameos! They're two dogs (one deceased, alas) that belong to a great supporter and old friend named Minda. You'll see them more in the upcoming scenes, they get to really mess some people up!

I've always loved drawing Bastion's teleporty ink line, it reminds me of those old Family Circus panels. Before Unsounded I only drew it in b/w comics - you can see an example on dA - but left black, I think it translates okay to colour.

I really like Iori and how her attitude towards losing her son clashes so starkly with Duane's towards losing Mikaila (and Rahm's towards the same loss, though we haven't seen how he deals with it yet). Iori really clings to her faith in order to cope with hardship but in quite a different way from Duane. Granted, she's Gefendur...

My big challenge with the Ripas here and also on some of the later pages this chapter, was to suggest subtext that's never explicitly spelled out in the story. So you get a broad sense of what happened with Dani and why but you don't get the full tale. Instead we see where it's left Iori and and Rahm in the present day, and then...

This is kind of a self-indulgent item. You guys hardly know Lord Winalils at all yet, and this artwork itself is pretty gloomy and glum, haha, but I wanted to make myself something I'd personally want to use every day! I'll have some of these at Megacon next month.

Ethelmik is a pretty town, when it's not on fire or bleeding smoke eels.

I'm actually pretty excited to finally get to some water. I love drawing water and watery landscapes, and the next part of the story will be focused around this river- the river Jarla - quite a bit.

I really enjoy drawing Iori's backyard. Can you imagine living right up against a river? And then she had two kids there? I decided she'd insist on it being all fenced off. And then she's got her little Crescian standard there, all patriotic and pretty. Don't set it on fire, Duane.

The centre panel was a lot of fun. Since Chitz works via a sort of khert-driven sonar, First Materials are invisible to Matty. Khert-lines don't intersect them, so any First Materials just come up as white blanks in his "vision." This does result in Duane's eyes being creepy blanks and Boo being a white silhouette, but it can't ...

Right about here I realised how long this scene was running and started trying to cram as many panels on the page as I could, haha. This was another conversation that had about two-thirds trimmed out of it.

There's a neat shot on the next page that finally shows what Matty's Chitz-vision looks like.

Duane and Sette's conversation is almost twice as long in the script, and necessitated a lot of paring down for the comic. There was a lot of lore dump that, while interesting, wasn't ultimately necessary and could be better placed in the future. Some of it was also a little rambly.

I would say Sette has a pretty good idea there about exploring the khert for answers. It will be a bit like clicking around the internet without any search engine, but he's bound to come up with a few good cat pictures if nothing else.

I think as a scrivener/scribe, Duane must be a steady draftsman; competent, at least. His journals have to be full of scribblings of the odd things he's seen over the years.

Anyway, I enjoy his take on the squishes but I'm not sure about his Lady Ilganyag.
