Up From Straussianism (w/ Matt McManus & Victor Bruzzone)

Here's something fun and a little different: your beloved cohost Matt Sitman was interviewed by Victor Bruzzone and Matt McManus on their podcast, Plastic Pills, and the ensuing conversation — about Matt's own history, the right-wing intellectual pipeline, and the enduring and contested influence of Leo Strauss on the conservative movement and its minds — is just fascinating.

So we're sharing it with you, dear listeners. I do want to acknowledge the elephant in the room: we're in a bit of a summer slow down at KYE headquarters. After sprinting to get the Roe v Wade series done last month, we've all had to take a bit of a breath amid the July heat — our producer, Jesse, has been on vacation — and so there've been fewer new episodes in the feed than we would prefer. But thank you for bearing with us. And trust that many excellent  episodes are in the works!

As a right winger I actually think that progressives deeply misunderstand the "unity" they see on the right. The grassroots movements have no power unless they are willing to throw away their votes on spoiler candidates, or by abstaining. It requires a longer time horizon to be an effective strategy at first I think, one that only comes with the total defeat the right felt in the 50s. But their power in the party only comes with their willingness to watch it all burn if they don't get their way. Even in 2020 Republicans were threatening to abstain in the Georgia runoffs (and throw a potential senate majority) b/c party leadership was backing off on election denial rhetoric. Similar aggressive strategies have been reasonably effective for Bloc Québécois and others. Progressives reluctantly voting for Biden isn't the same as Evangelicals voting for Trump. Progressives always fall in line against the evil Republicans, and as such are never seriously courted by mainstream policy makers.

Thanks Matt. If I have limited time, what’s the best biography of Leo Strauss?

Matt, I wish you were a professor.

Deseret Suydam

Thank you both for responses

You're right that Straussian circles tend to be male dominated. But there are a number of notable Straussian women: Diana Schaub, Mary Nichols, Catherine Zuckert, to name three off the top of my head. (Matt)

Had a straussian professor from University of toronto who was a woman - Lisa Leibowitz

Because I’m struck by how all the thought leaders are men-the straussian thinkers-is there any development aimed at consertive women

This is a question for Matthew-not sure if you look at these comments-but I’m wondering if many women are part of this conservative support network as students and then later in jobs etc

Thank you for posting this and thank you Sam for pushing for it to be posted. Great conversation.

Excited to listen to this. I hadn’t heard of Plastic Pills but it seems right up my alley.
