Single units are used to save money & generally act as a deterrent mainly because they do not give any indication of the overall force.

I was on set today, we had this Lovely young new recruit - just 20 years old. 

We uniformed her, booted her, gloved her, masked her and armed her

then we put her in impossible situations.

We deployed this Standard Combat Unit on Patrol, just selected a number and deployed the resource. 

Information indicated a very low chance of enemy activity. Units are deployed as sentries to  be eyes and ears, not necessarily stop enemy forces, but just to warn of them.
