First Time Watching The Thing!!!

Comments

They Live is such a good film!! It has some deep messages in it and the best (and longest) fight scene ever!! :) Let's all vote for JL to watch They Live.

I’m have to go back to watch it to see that now

best john carpenter movie (maybe tied with they live, you should absolutely react to that as well) and just an all time great movie in general

This is my favorite John Carpenter film. In an interview, he said the only way to tell who is the thing is to look at their eyes. If they have that little eye light twinkle we all have in our eyes then they are human, if their eyes are blank with no shine they are the thing. Also, there is a theory that at the end, Mac was holding a malatov cocktail in his hand with the liquor bottle and that when he gave it to Childs and he drank it then he is a thing because the thing would have no taste and it wouldn't know it was gasoline instead of alcohol to drink. Plus Childs does not have the eye light shine in his eyes at the end. Great reactions JL!!

Hahahahaha JL, your last words on the video.. “how the f don’t google know” I needed that man. You made my night dude.

The Thing was competing with E.T. in theaters, which didn’t help. And I don’t think people were ready for it. Carpenter was DEFINITELY ahead of his time! And Rob Bottin!!! Those effects!!! CGI has killed horror.

So this in my top 5 all time favorite horror movies. The amazing special effects aside, the build-up of suspense and paranoia is f-ing next level. Sadly this did not perform well at the box office when it was released. As with several John Carpenter movies it did not really get recognition or praise it probably deserved at the time. One of the tragedies of Hollywood I think is that Carpenter was repeatedly ahead of his time. He did a lot of movies that were great (and he had a fair share of stinkers too), but most of the truly good ones became cult classics years after they made no money at the box office.

I wanted to warn you about the doggies, but spoilers would be inappropriate. I was 9 when I watched this for the first time with my Dad, and we must have watched it every time it came on HBO after that. We had an agreement - I would leave the room during the dog scene, and he would tell me when it was safe to come back. I could handle slimy, bloody, bitey monsters, but anything with dogs was just too much. Doggies aside, this is probably my 2nd favorite horror movie (behind Alien). A couple of FYIs on some questions you had: You will never know if Childs and/or Mac are Things. That's one of the greatest debates in horror history and (I think) one of the best endings in all of cinema. There are a lot of comics, fan fiction, etc., but I don't pay attention to non-canon. I am a purist. 2) Also tons of debates about who got infected when; I don't think Blair was infected when he went batshit in the beginning. Someone (possibly Palmer) got to him while he was locked in the shed. There are so many potential clues scattered throughout, but no one knows anything for sure. If they say they know, they are lying. And you must torch them. I LOVE THIS MOVIE SO MUCH!!!!! Now if you can make it through The Exorcist, the worst will be behind you. Maybe...

I love that there is a guy called Mac and a guy called Windows, and the Mac guy wins

Seriously, not to be a sadist, but when I first started watching this channel, I thought, ‘So, he startles easily, is easily grossed out and always says not to kill the puppy. Oh! The Thing should be comedy gold!’

I like watching the internal battle between "I love dogs and this is a beautiful dog" with "I think this movie is telling me something is up". I think you've seen enough movies now for that kin of thing to not go by unnoticed. *wipes tear from eye* They grow up so fast!

Felt so bad for you, JL, during that whole scene. Was hoping you’d make it through okay! 😄

Loved this! They made The Thing video game for PS2 some years back which let you know what happened to MacReady and Childs but I’m not sure if it’s canon or not.

Propping up pillows, popping some popcorn, grabbing some chocolate, tucking in my 5 co-pilots, and watching tonight! This is the one I’ve been waiting for!!!
