Map Type Poll
Added 2024-09-06 12:43:52 +0000 UTCHi everyone,
I'm interested in knowing what sort of maps you prefer to use in your games. Do you use mainly smaller battle maps or deckplans, or do you use larger adventure maps, for example?
I have listed some of the most common map types below with short explanations.
Vote for the map types you would find useful. I'll check the results at the end of the month and next month's maps will be based on the results of this poll. A more detailed map poll will come later at the turn of the month.
And as usual, any comments and feedback are welcome!
Thanks!
Map Types
Generic Battlemaps - These maps typically cover some generic location or a few rooms worth of area. Normally used for more generic or random encounters.
Arena Maps / Boss Fight Battlemaps - These are maps of larger and more distinctive areas. Great for good for boss fights and other scenes with tactical significance.
Large Scale Area Maps (Overland travel & vehicle combat) - These maps can cover a block or two, or some other area of similar size. The emphasis is on building and large terrain features instead of rooms and furniture-sized props.
City / Settlement Maps - Maps of small settlements or districts. Usually used to navigate inside a town, city or colony.
Adventure Maps ("Dungeon maps") - These are maps covering a large building or similar area. Usually you can run an entire scenario or a campaign chapter on this one map.
Horizontal Spaceship Deckplans - Maps of spaceships with artificial gravity. The decks are laid out horizontally like in a boat or an airplane. Most ships in Star Wars, Star Trek or Alien are ships like this.
Vertical Spaceship Deckplans - These are deckplans that have the ship decks stacked vertically like in a tower or a building. There is no artificial gravity, except for the force created by acceleration or spinning motion. Spaceships in hard science fiction (The Expanse, for example) are usually ships like this.
Space Battlemaps (for starship combat) - Maps for space battles. These battles could take place in open space, orbit, nebulas, around fleets, asteroid fields, or debris fields, for example.
Scene Art - Not maps per see, but illustrations of locations to set the mood and maybe provide a background for the theater of the mind combat.

Big spread on the poll! Wasn't expecting that

2024-09-20 05:11:32 +0000 UTCI don't use battle maps, so I usually prefer scene art as an illustration to help players project in their own theater of the mind.

2024-09-07 21:48:03 +0000 UTCI am currently using a heavily edited Jungle Valley Zone as an overland map for a campaign, but it's kind of janky since I had to move around a bunch of things and try and combine and color shift to get it to look more like a desert bordering a mountain. I'd love more overland maps, and of course more vehicle scale combat maps since its a Lancer game. The only other thing I'd throw in there is that I've gotten a ton of use out of the desert structures and outpost structures, but my players have seen every single building in the collection a couple of times now across a dozen or more maps, and I'd love just more building assets. Thanks for the hard work!

2024-09-06 19:55:50 +0000 UTCI have to agree, this type of map is very hard to find and this Patreon has some really good ones. I'd like to see more.

2024-09-06 18:49:22 +0000 UTCIt's really hard not to just vote "all of the above" but that's not useful guidance to you. I'd love to see more vertical spaceship, exterior space and large scale battlemaps, just because those areas are much more poorly served by the map community in general. (Note that many games using space battlemaps use hex grids.)

2024-09-06 16:06:01 +0000 UTCfor me space map is not usefull as NASA have very good map to use, I like multiple map for a grand scale theme, example a 4 story building with 6 maps (outside, floor 1to 4) and roof

2024-09-06 13:15:37 +0000 UTCI wanted to rank these as well. I use adventure maps the most (I love when they have room names, but that might just be me), followed by horizontal ship deckplans and boss maps. I haven't used them, but I'm interested to try using city/settlement maps and space battlemaps.

2024-09-06 12:55:58 +0000 UTCLarge scale maps would be a dream. I've used your Jungle Valley Zone a few too many times. I'm trying to get better at drawing these regional maps, but my scale is so bad. Scene art is my 2nd vote, but it would have to go along with the current map release. City/Settlements gets an honorable mention as my 3rd vote.
