Sakai, the Fallen Fighter

Sakai died in the Battle of Sakai, which he named after himself.

Bandits attacked Sakai’s home village in the night, believing that the skilled warrior was not home. To their dismay, he was. He challenged them to follow through with their attack, and so they did. Although Sakai slew 23 bandits on his own and the people of the village were left unscathed, he succumbed to his wounds shortly after the battle.

Sakai’s skill in combat only grew in the afterlife, as did his pride. His seeming arrogance, people realized, was just self-awareness: a hero that knew he died a hero. Thus, Latehavenites found him as entertaining as they did inspiring. Realizing this himself, Sakai decided to personally introduce himself to all residents of Latehaven he hadn’t yet met, which led to his meeting with Muka and Volpiko.

Volpiko explained her own plight to Sakai, and mentioned the strange, supernatural compulsion she felt to work with him. Unsurprised and believing his reputation to precede him, Sakai obliged, and the trio began questing for Latehavenites in need of help, from resolving unpermitted hauntings to escorting new dead into the city from the surrounding wasteland.

It was only several weeks of afterlife adventuring together when the party met the subject of growing civil unrest—someone called Lorenzo, claiming to have transcended to Latehaven without ever having died.

Sakai is an undead fighter NPC with a Challenge Rating of 9, and his release includes the following:

• His character card, which includes his character art and NPC stat block.
• The legendary Armor of One Hundred Arms, which technically doesn't grow that many arms, but foes may feel otherwise.
• Midorichi, a longsword with corrosive magic that can flow through other weapons.
• The Scorching Kunai, daggers that generate heat when thrown.
• The Giving Glass, a delightfully healthy set of glassware, great for both preparing for battle and making friends.
• Skullscowl, a helmet that makes you magically, angrily persuasive.
