The wine metaphor is one of my favorite literary devices I think I've ever seen in any medium. 1. Allllllll the way back in episode 6 when Gilgamesh offers Kirei a drink of wine (his first enticement), Kirei doesn't even drink it. However, Gilgamesh is CONSTANTLY seen drinking wine which is representative of the sin of temptation/deriving pleasure from the suffering of others. He's still desperately fighting to remain "normal", to keep his dark urges at bay while Gilgamesh revels at the sight of foolish mongrels dancing for him. 2. In episode 12 he rebukes Gilgamesh: "King of Heroes, only an inhuman demon like yourself might find the suffering of others sweet to the taste" (further expanding on the taste of wine metaphor) as he makes a last ditch effort to convince himself that Gilgamesh is incorrect. Again, only Gilgamesh is drinking in this scene. 3. And finally, in episode 21. now that he's given in to temptation, he says "If it will taste this wonderful, I would dearly love to sample it again". He's finally given in to Gilgamesh's temptations and has embraced the darker side of himself that he tried to shut away, committing himself to the very thing he scolded Gilgamesh for. But this time, they BOTH drink, completing Kirei's character arc and his fall from 'grace''.
