Golden Shrike - 225

Prue and Gitta are background characters so there's not much light shed on their backgrounds (heh), but as per usual, I know what they're all about! Basically, it's a tradition that god-callers pass their knowledge to younger generations to keep it going, but this knowledge is mostly reserved for deer who 'deserve it'. Our mean girls Prue and Gitta very much wanted to be fabled god-callers, but in the end they didn't have the core for it, at least according to Helevise, who has already taught as much as she can to her daughter, Iralee. Ira is her gift she wants to leave to the world, these naive doelings were just servants to her.

How all this works, is that god-callers take willing 'heels' (just a fun word for an apprentice, heeler) from different herds to teach. Prue comes from a mixed herd inland, Gitta is a coastian. If they hadn't both gone with Helevise, they wouldn't have met. And as shitty as they are, they're now best buds!

In my earliest drafts these two were a bit more woven into the story, but it had to be scrapped after I got rid of two characters. Remember the woodlanders chasing Kasko in chapter 5? Well!

This is who they were! Team Rocket, Gousla (grey) and Retter (tan, antlerless stag). Gousla was Gitta's sister from the coastian herd, and Retter was Prue's brother. If I remember right, they were really proud of their sisters getting into god-calling business. The two themselves were some shady business deer, making pacts and slithering around making things harder for everyone but their boss who I never got to.

To keep the story more compact, I had to scrap them. They were a really fun pair to me, but in the end their output to the story was too small.

...legs. someone's watching them.

Considering I'm pretty sure those are Eve's legs in that last panel, I feel like their prospects aren't looking that great.

They believed the resurrection was permanent. From what I understand, Helevise either knew or suspected that it wouldn’t be but chose not to tell them, then used the “well you didn’t ask” excuse as her reason why she didn’t.

Even if they are jerks, I do feel bad for them. They got scammed and will never be able to be mothers, and lost their halves. I forget: Did they believe that Eve's resurrection would be permanent, or were they convinced that losing their halves was something a god-caller has to do (which would be odd, since halves are supposed to be the go-between for deer and Karuna)?

Tori Sol

It is very optimistic that they expect no one will mind them deserting a secretive, god wrangling group

Grey

Usma jumps in, "But how was it a waste of time when you have discovered the magic of friendship?!" >XD

I love how this chapter already seems so love/heart-oriented (hence the name I guess). Boneslav and his family having a heartfelt goodbye, these gals having a heart-to-heart... This story is a joy to follow, and the work and thought you put in it is really shining through.

I absolutely love getting to read your thought process on writing decisions, I just love this story so much it's really cool to get to read this behind the scenes!

Gousla and Retter will always live in our hearts <3 and even if they're mean and very rude, I like their friendship and I feel bad for them. Maybe if Helevise was a better person to them, they won't act like they do

Kwelve

I love reading lore from your stories. So much depth.
