Cheese & Croissants (& CMS)

Who is the person in the first photo with me?! (Continue reading below)

The second photo-mashup is ON the Switzerland/France border. I got silly and pretended to eat a croissant on the French side, and some cheese on the Swiss side. Those were added in afterwards. They are not real. Tricked ya.

Funny story, we were determined to buy some Swiss cheese before we left Switzerland. So after all our CERN tours, we popped into a cheese shop. Confused that our prices were in Euros, we bought some gruyere and went on our merry way. Only later did we start to wonder about the Euros, looked at the receipt, and realized the cheese shop was in France. We NEVER got to buy Swiss cheese! What a tragedy... I will say, it rarely happens in North America that you're surprised to be in the wrong country.

Can you get enough CERN?!

The second photo is behind the scenes of our trip to the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS), one of the "general-purpose" detectors at along the 27-km ring of the Large Hadron Collider. I find it amusing that they use the term "general-purpose" for a particle detector. These things are DEFINITELY not general-purpose, they are so specialized to study the smallest particles in the universe.

And you get a little sneak behind the camera at my new editor/videographer, Levi Butner! He's been working with me since May, 2019, and I couldn't be happier. I actually met Levi through my sister while I was looking for an editor. Filming is now a lot more fun (than it was alone in my room). Levi has a great sense of humor, so we're usually either laughing, orwe just stop work and talk about physics for too many distracted minutes. It's awesome.

So I was scrolling through my Patreon feed and I saw this for a second time; but this time, I'm on a desktop. Nice shoes! I have the orange low-top pair from that series.

Alexander

Nope. I'm a rebel!

Dianna Cowern

yes, actually! A power bank shaped like one of the LHC magnets. :)

Dianna Cowern

Did you escape with any cool loot?

Stu

Thanks for sharing science travel adventure tidbits! And hi Levi!

Parachuting Turtle

Did you have to show your "papers" when you changed directions while standing on the marker? :-)

Howard Simons

woah, wish my croissants came out that golden. want buy muon oven! my science woah moment: realizing SpaceX Starship's forward passenger section (diameter 9.0 m) will fit inside the CMS (15.0 m)

It looks like a whole lot of fun is being had. Also, welcome to Levi!

Get To Know Nature

The CMS is so compact, they needed to use the Higgs to confirm it exists. I read something like that.

Olaf Doschke

I end up in the wrong state a lot, but then I didn't grow up on an island :-)

Michael Porter

"I will say, it rarely happens in North America that you're surprised to be in the wrong country." And Switzerland is not even in the EU...

Dragi Raos

"I find it amusing that they use the term "general-purpose" for a particle detector." I find it even more amusing that they call it "COMPACT muon solenoid", at 15x21m! :o) ALICE at least has "large" in its name...

Dragi Raos

That just got read out through my cars computer and that made me laugh is surprising though I wonder how they cut down on the electro magnetic interferiwnce of so many cables

Camo

Wires. Wires everywhere. SO MANY CABLES.

Dianna Cowern

May 2019... Does it have to do with the new definition of the kilogram taking effect?

Nice post enjoying hearing about your travels in Europe, what thing surprises you most about cern btw
