Heartbreak High Reaction - Episode 5

Comments

Oh man, I genuinely forgot how this one ended, and I watched it not too long ago. I feel so terrible for Cash, and agree Darren should've been more understanding. I feel like they did regret it almost immediately though, from the way they nearly had a panic attack; though that could've just been hurt in general. This whole spiderweb of how everyone's intertwined storylines just wreck shit, is totally crazy.

I was a little scared to watch this episode after the way the last one ended, which is one reason it took me extra day to get to it. But I’m glad I did, not because the things that happened were all that fun to see, but because they raised really important issues and developed the characters in interesting ways. To be honest, I think Spider is much worse than Harry, who at least shows the possibility of changing for the better. I don’t think Spider is ever going to be a better person.

great reaction as always jackie! :] hope you're having a great time in paris. just wanted to comment about the "is australia this open and unaccepting?" id say not - but i'm a long way beyond the school years. when i was at school though, there certainly wasn't any people who were known to be LGBT+ and anyone who suggested any sort of relationship of sexual acts which were deemed by people to be LGBT+ would have been bullied and attacked. i'd hope that it's a lot better than that now and i dare say it is. however, there is still a lot of "blokey masculinity" in australia and i can see people in places like schools or workplaces being ostracised for that. which is why i really like the storyline of ca$h and darren. i absolutely love ca$h's character and how sensitive he is given that he has a "hard" exterior / persona. referred to earlier in the show (which im pretty sure you mentioned) is that he is an "eshay" which is basically like a "chav" in the UK. it's a more recent subculture here, but i dare say you'd find it very hard to find someone like ca$h in that group of people. i think this was demonstrated in ep 4 at the ball - where he went outside with the eye patch on and saw one of his mates and quickly ripped it off. i've written war and peace, but to cut an even longer story short - i think that australian society has progressed a lot in the last couple of decades, but is still far from being as "open" and "accepting" as shown in the show; particularly in a school environment. hopefully it continues to change more rapidly for the better. if any other aussies disagree, please clarify, i'd love to see / hear your thoughts also.

I have some conflicting feelings about the way the threesome was handled in terms of the reactions those involved got. Firstly yeah the threesome wasn't a great idea in the circumstances, Malachi clearly wasn't in the right place to make that decision. However all three did participate together, yet while the two guys got slaps on the back from their peers, Harper did seem to get a lot of vitriol and shaming from all genders in the school. Malachi admitted he was in the wrong but managed to stay friends with Amerie but Harper was shamed by people who weren't directly involved. There's a lot of the very casual misogyny peppered through the series like that as well as very direct examples like the two very different sessions around sexual assault prevention that were given to the boys and girls in the SLTs class... Having seen the series I don't want to say too much about how Harper reacted but I'd say trauma plays a part. I definitely read Cash as being somewhere on the Ace-spec. Possibly demi as I think it was him who wrote the slip about needing a connection with someone before intimacy. And Malachi is obviously in a really bad place. I've seen a few other people react to his scene in the shower and state "Oh he's gay then?" And very few consider the possibility of him being queer in some other way eg pan/bi/mspec... it seems there's still a way to go to get rid of bi-erasure/pan-erasure and ace-erasure even within the LGBTQIA+ community. I'm glad you acknowledged his feelings of sexual confusion without feeling the need to label it 😊

I agree with everyone in reading into it that Ca$h is on the ace spectrum, but I don't think he is maybe fully asexual. He might be greysexual or demisexual. Especially with the clever editing of the scene in class where they are going through the 'likes' box. The line is read "I need to know the person before I can be intimate with them" and the camera cuts to showing Ca$h kind of subtly looking around sheepishly. As someone who is greysexual and needs the emotional/intellectual connection, that resonated. Added with the fact that I also agree Darren has a connection to sex that is utterly removed from emotions and is purely used to validate his own self worth and attractiveness. So Ca$h could of also meant it as "I'm not like you. I'm not wired like that" with linking to - he needs the connection and he was not ready to have any sort of sex yet. Be it oral or penetrative or manual.

and I love the Cash and Darren storyline. It is fab representation but I also liked that it was a slow buildup and you could see where both of them were coming from. Darren has some stuff to unpack about sex and his self worth.

A few things. There are organisations trying to change what kids are taught in school. I work for one and we do relationship education, so very close to (but hopefully better than) the SLTs. just want to say it is happening but it needs to be recognised and funded properly. Most PSHE teachers are just handed curriculum with no training. My issue with the 3some specifically is that it should never have happened but the fall out seems to have been disproportionate. Malakai is dealing with complex trauma and has now lost his relationship with Amerie. Harper was broken up with and has lost all of her friends (they were right to call her on it but she is now alone). Dusty has lost nothing. Missy who called out Harper has no problem sitting next to Dusty. His friends all think it is a joke. He has a right to say that it was too much for him and he wanted a break but he ghosted Harper, refused to talk about it and then blamed her for how he felt. We all look at Spider (who is trash) but Dusty is a manipulative wanker and I can't even with him.

This is the episode that made me cry tbh. I hope u are having fun in Rome and enjoying ur well deserved time off 🥰❤️

it’s not explicitly stated this season that cash is asexual but i agree that that definitely seems to be what he is describing so hopefully they go more into the storyline for s2

Grace Pryor

My heart aches for Ca$h not having ace representation to help understand himself, even while his character is helping to provide that representation for others. Also for Darren whose self esteem is clearly tied up with sex and sex appeal.

One of my favourite episodes! Will watch when I’m out of work x
