We're expanding our budget for reporting as part of our response to journalism crisis, which has intensified as a result of COVID-19 pandemic. We're accepting pitches from reporters/writers, and donations will be matched.
Any journalist or writer can submit a pitch.
We have issues we particularly want to hire journalists to cover—labor, health care, prisons, and the environment—but we'll consider any pitch on any topic.
PAYMENT:
It's difficult to say what the opportunity would pay without seeing the pitch. Everything is negotiable, and we typically encourage writers to tell us what they would want to be paid when submitting a pitch.
That said—I imagine the range would be anywhere from $250-600. It all depends on the work that goes into it. We don't pay by the word. It's more like what amount of time, resources, and/or labor went into producing that article. Was it reporting or research intensive? How many sources? Did it involve primary source documents? All of the above goes into our decision-making.
