This is a position with Democracy in Color, a project of Powerpac.org. Democracy in Color is a political organization focused on race, politics and the multiracial, progressive New American Majority. Democracy in Color is dedicated to empowering the New American Majority by providing insight and analysis of contemporary American politics through media, public conversations, research and writing on politics and social change with a race-conscious lens. Democracy in Color seeks to offer inspiration and guidance by highlighting smart strategies for change, lifting up the work of key leaders and organizations and working to improve the overall movement for justice and equality by demanding transparency and accountability from the country’s leaders. This is done through columns, campaigns, report cards, and its newest product, the “Democracy in Color with Steve Phillips” podcast.
Democracy in Color was founded in 2016 by Steve Phillips, author of New York Times bestselling book, Brown Is the New White.
DESCRIPTION OF THE POSITION:
The Staff Writer will be responsible for amplifying and projecting the Democracy in Color voice by developing content for the organization’s various platforms, including, but not limited to email/email newsletters, website, podcast, and social media. The Staff Writer will assist in implementing the organization’s social media strategies in order to deepen engagement with supporters and garner participation with specific campaigns. The Staff Writer will work closely with the Digital Director and the Media Relations Director to carry out their roles and responsibilities, and will report to the Digital Director.
This position is full-time, exempt, and remote; occasional travel to San Francisco (once travel is deemed safe) will be required.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Develop weekly or biweekly content that is informative, appealing and on-brand, and oversee live content creation and amplification in high leverage moments (i.e. live tweeting debates, forums, and hearings)
- In collaboration with the Digital Director, develop and implement the organization’s overall social media strategy
- Monitor news outlets and social media throughout each day for breaking news relevant to the organization’s mission,vision, and priorities and develop and post content as appropriate
- Create, curate, and manage published content across social media platforms and website
- Edit documents from multiple sources to achieve a consistent style and voice
- Assist in creating weekly social metric reports and performing analysis on post performance, audience engagement
- Track and measure the success of campaigns (social media or otherwise), and optimize content based on its performance
- Stay up to date with latest social media best practices and technologies
- Occasional research for podcast, articles
REQUIRED SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:
- A demonstrated commitment to social, racial and economic justice
- Cultural competency with and deep knowledge of communities of color
- Excellent writing and communication skills; must demonstrate experience writing for the web and social media
- Ability to take pieces of information, facts, and statements and tie them together into a cohesive and coherent narrative
- Build effective working relationships with subjects to efficiently gather content information as required
- Familiarity and facility with social media platforms, including but not limited to Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube; experience with increasing engagement amongst audience a plus
- Literacy with G-suite
- Results-focused and organized
- Ability to manage several projects and priorities, work on fast turnaround projects, and prioritize work to meet deadlines
- Self-motivated and proactive, proven ability to work independently
- Energetic, creative, nimble, team player with positive attitude
- Sense of humor
- Ability to work outside of traditional hours as the need arises
EDUCATION:
A degree in journalism or related field or at least two years’ experience as a professional writer is preferred.
COMPENSATION:
The salary range is estimated at $60,000 – $70,000, depending on experience. Benefits include health insurance, paid vacation, sick, and holiday leave, and ability to participate in the 401(k) program.
