Here's what kind of research we'd be interested in (and NOT interested in) hearing about at Discover Magazine:

INTERESTED IN:

New research with BROAD public interest. Broader than the already-science-interested. Health stories are great. Think: nutrition, cancer, heart disease, sleep, Alzheimer's — but only when there's real-world applications/ramifications.
Neat findings from any field that have a dash of mystery or intrigue. Archaeology, space, human origins, nature are good contenders. Stuff with a dash of "can you believe it?" or "what the heck?" or "I can't wait to tell my Uncle, he loves that stuff."
Anything that answers a question that a lot of people might have. Explainers. Answers to often-Googled questions. "I've always wondered..." or "How does X work?"

NOT INTERESTED IN

Super basic research or other stepping-stone findings, especially if it's in a fairly technical (meaning, not reader-friendly on its own) field. This is the vast majority of what I get in my inbox!
Internal or external awards, promotions, grants, new facilities, programs, etc. at your institution (unless, you're like, NASA announcing a new space program).
"Can I put you in touch with our expert, so-and-so, who can comment on these topics?" (No, thanks! Pitch a story, not a source.)
Any follow-up emails EVER! Yes, I got your email! I read it! I will contact you if I want more information. Really. I promise.
