APPLY TO BE DISSENT’S FIRST COLLEGE COLUMNIST
If you’re an undergraduate who loves democratic socialism and serious journalism, please consider applying to be Dissent’s college columnist. We’re looking to bring on a current undergraduate to write a series of articles over the coming year on topics that fall under the broad heading of “college.” The subjects are up to the author: student life after COVID-19, trends in left-wing campus activism, trends in right-wing campus activism, how the internet is ruining and/or saving a generation—really, the choice is yours. What matters is that you have a fresh perspective and a distinct voice.
We’re planning to publish the first article in our fall print issue as part of a special feature on higher education today. The essay should run between 1,000 and 2,000 words, and the author will be paid $500. We’ll aim to publish subsequent pieces—either in print or online—over the course of the year. To apply, you’ll need:
- A cover letter of no more than 600 words introducing yourself and explaining what you’d like to write about for your first column.
- A writing sample that shows you at your best. It can be a previously published article, a paper for a class, or something you’ve come up with just for this. Our judgment will be based on the quality of the piece, not where it comes from.
If you’re interested, please send an application to submissions@dissentmagazine.org with the subject line “College Columnist.” The deadline is July 6.
