We are witnessing a shift in the ways history and heritage are defined in so-called Canada. The people don’t want reconciliation. The people want revenge. The people want repatriation of stolen artifacts. The people want reparations for transatlantic enslavement. The people want Land Back. Daddy Canada, make it rain.
GUTS invites unpublished writing on the theme of REVENGE for our first issue of the re-branded, re-launched, and re-newed GUTS magazine. We want to know if you think revenge is a dish best served piping hot, or cold, cold, cold. What does revenge mean to you?
We’re looking for visual and written essays, interviews, comics, journalism, poetry, short fiction, and humour all on the topic of REVENGE.
TOPICS TO THINK ABOUT:
Migration; displacement; transformation; grassroots movements; wildfires; missions back to your hometown; that mean girl from high school who became a nurse; gender anarchy; tearing down statues; reinvention; reanimation; renewal; fluidity; change; justice; there is no justice, even transformative, on stolen lands; the body keeps the score; water is life; drinking water; no TERF shit; renaming; reworking; water under the bridge; an eye for an eye; crip revenge on public space; mad pride; down with sanism; the long game; revenge as healing; revenge as self destruction; revenge for revenge’s sake; harm reduction; living; reproductive futures; sex worker revenge; the “mad Indigenous woman” stereotype; no bad victims; no landlords; houseless communities taking back carceral spaces from the state; abolition; bimbofying refusal; the masculinist surveillance of tone; and more.
Submit a short pitch (maximum 300 words) for the REVENGE issue describing your proposed project no later than March 31st, 2022 to submit@gutsmagazine.ca. Please include a link to or copy of a writing sample that you feel adequately represents your work. Please look over our past issues to get a sense of the kind of work we’re looking for.
First drafts will be due on May 15, 2022 and final submissions (500-4,000 words) will be due on June 15, 2022.
Compensation will be provided for contributors selected for the issue. Compensation rates are competitive. Please see our Submissions page for more information.
