Pitches wanted (New York City) | $200-$400+ per article
Added 2022-04-08 11:58:01 +0000 UTCCOMPANY/PUBLICATION: HELL GATE
Hell Gate is interested in essays, photography, reported stories, and features about New York City. We want to cover topics as varied as flood mitigation in Central Queens, the disappearance (and reappearance) of underground music venues, below-the-radar union battles, wildlife in all urban contexts, an especially galling subway ad, and a decades-old grudge between spa owners.
Hell Gate, in collaboration with the Freelance Solidarity Project, has created a standard contract and a statement of commitments that promotes fair practices for freelance writers, photographers, and artists. You can read more about that here.
We welcome journalists/writers of all levels of experience to pitch us at tips@hellgatenyc.com. Be sure to put “PITCH” in the subject line.
A few tips for a successful pitch:
Be as specific as you can about what your story/essay/feature is about. The more specific (and hopefully unique), the better.
Keep your pitch to a few sentences. If we’re interested, you can always give us more detail later.
Our rates are roughly: $200+ for an essay/blog post (~700 words), $250+ for a photo assignment, $300+ for a reported story, and $400+ for a longer (1200+ words) feature.

TO HELP YOU CRAFT YOUR PITCH:
- Learn more about the publication: Hell Gate is an outlet owned and run by journalists covering New York City, with a mixture of blog posts, features, columns, and investigations. The site is trenchant, playful, outraged, irreverent, deeply skeptical of power but stubbornly idealistic. More information here.
- Check out our collection of pitch excerpts on this page and find more sample pitches at The Open Notebook Database and at SuccessfulPitches.com.
- Do not forget to end your pitch with (1) a short introduction about yourself; (2) a paragraph highlighting your writing experience, relevant credentials and publication credits; and (3) links to your strongest work or portfolio, and online profile.
