photogénie is looking for criticism that delves into histories of representation, possible futures without discrimination, or liminal states where apparitions haunt the frame – literally and metaphorically. How are these ideas channelled into film aesthetics? What are the formal dimensions of absence? What is shown and what can be shown: is the off-screen space ever absent? Why does English language criticism insist on the value of presence over absence and how can flipping the scales rewrite film now, in the past, or for the future?
