Fulcrum Publishing is publishing an anthology on women’s reproductive health writing as part of its series of books on women’s health and related issues.

Women’s reproductive health is at the forefront of many issues today, whether political, cultural, or personal. The recent Supreme Court decision on abortion is top of mind for most of us. But abortion is only the tip of the iceberg. Our culture has created a system in which women’s health is treated differently than men’s health. Whether we’re in the dark about the changes that occur during perimenopause or fighting for access to menstrual products, being a woman today means bearing the burden of an opaque reproductive health system. Fulcrum aims to shed light and provide insight where we can.

Our wish list: Creative nonfiction personal essays on abortion, contraception, menstruation, infertility, miscarriage, IVF, perimenopause/menopause, pregnancy, fibroids, PCOS, endometriosis, and any other topic we may have missed. We are open to broad interpretations. The most important thing is that your essay be well-written. While this is a predominantly woman-centered collection, men, we know, are affected by womens’ health issues too. We are open to their submissions as well.

What we don’t want: reported news stories or academic articles, fiction or poetry.

GUIDELINES:

• Submissions should be nonfiction personal essays no longer than 2,000 words.
• We are open to various structures and hybrid forms.
• We will accept previously published pieces, but please include original publication information and ensure that you can get permission from the original publication before submitting.
• Contributors will receive $150.00.

The anthology will be edited by Stephanie Vessely, an editor and writer whose work has appeared in Hippocampus Magazine, The Offing, December Magazine, and elsewhere. She has an MFA degree in Creative Nonfiction from Regis University. Her essay collection recently made the long list in the Santa Fe Writers Project 2022 Literary Awards.

TO SUBMIT:

• All submissions should be double-spaced and in 12pt Times New Roman Font. Please include page numbers on your manuscript.
• If you are using footnotes, please do not embed them.

• Deadline: January 20, 2023
• We will notify you regarding your submission in the spring of 2023. We will not be able to provide personal feedback for each submission.
