We're seeking an experienced Communications Manager to join our team to guide the organization's established communications and storytelling strategy and functions. In this role, you'll help shape Civilla's voice, influence, and impact.
THE ROLE
As Communications Manager, your day-to-day responsibilities will include:
- Strategy - Steward the organization’s current communication strategy, managing existing channels while exploring new and creative opportunities to tell stories that create impact.
- Content development - Work alongside internal/external teammates to guide the development of communications including editorial content, social media, press materials, award submissions, website updates, case studies, etc.

- Coaching - Coach staff on effective messaging, supporting in media preparation, talks/presentations, and interviews.
WHAT YOU'LL NEED FOR THIS ROLE
You are an equity-minded communicator skilled at telling stories that move hearts and minds. Equal parts storyteller and strategic thinker, you have a strong foundation in PR/media relations. You bring experience managing traditional communication channels while being eager to explore new and creative pathways for storytelling that create impact.
We believe a successful Communications Manager at Civilla will have most (but not necessarily all!) of the following qualifications. It is not necessary that you see yourself in every category to apply.
- Mission-alignment - You are passionate about using your skills to support long-term, systemic change in institutions and advocate for people who rely on public services.
- Public relations experience - You’ve developed expertise in public relations and/or communications. You’ve pitched and placed stories in the media and have prepared people for interviews. Public sector experience is preferred.
- Equity-centered approach - Your approach to uncovering and crafting stories is rooted in equity. You have experience shaping narratives where equity and inclusion are central.
- Writer and storyteller - You are a stellar writer and storyteller with comfort working across a range of mediums (from long-form blog posts to punchy social media copy). You have an eye for details and a keen proofreading ability—you nerd out on grammar and catch typos before they go out the door.
- Human-centered - You’re a creative and strategic thinker who centers the experiences and stories of the people who are most impacted by our work when crafting narratives.
- Proactive and organized - You’re a self-starter who works flexibly and efficiently, prioritizing and managing multiple projects at once.
- Familiarity with visual design - You’ve used tools and templates to develop printed and digital media. You’re familiar with (but not necessarily proficient in) common industry design and collaboration tools, such as Adobe Creative Suite.
- Relational - You’re empathetic, collaborative, and positive with the desire and ability to build strong relationships with our team and partners.
