CALL FOR PITCHES

Studio welcomes article pitches from both emerging and established writers, academics, scholars, and journalists writing about contemporary Canadian craft and design and related stories. We are interested in original ideas, unique voices and perspectives, little-known histories, and anything that challenges the status quo of craft and design and the ideas around making. Studio Magazine is a national publication committed to thoughtful, careful, and engaging writing about contemporary Canadian craft and design. We also have an ongoing commitment to supporting and mentoring writers.

Spring/Summer 2024: DEFINITION
Deadline: September 30, 2023

What is craft, anyway? For the Spring/Summer 2024 issue of Studio, we’re putting together an issue that re-visits the question of what it is that defines craft. While we’re interested in the shifts brought about by technology, we’re also looking to explore themes including, but not limited to, authenticity, classification, heritage, history, and cultural shifts. Topics of interest include:

• How has the definition of craft changed over time? What has been included and excluded at different moments?
• Who gets to define the scope and parameters of craft disciplines?
• How are cultural shifts reflected in craft — people, processes, materials, and markets?
• What new spaces are multi-disciplinary craft makers creating?
• How is craft related to other social institutions such as the military, prisons, hospitals, universities, etc.?

Please send pitches to pitches@studiomagazine.ca. Include in your pitch a brief bio and links to writing samples. We review all pitches, and those that are accepted for publication will be contacted by email. Payment is upon publication.
