Deadline: 5 May 2023
Maddy Myers, Deputy Editor-Games at Polygon, is looking for pitches:
I am seeking pitches for the reprisal of Polygon's Video Game Fashion Week! Send ideas on your favorite in-game looks, including hair/make-up/mods OR interview a fashion designer about hyrule chic OR share your cosplay tips OR surprise me. Rates $300+. Check out last year's version of Video Game Fashion Week for inspiration (and also examples of stuff we've already covered, so you can build on that): https://www.polygon.com/23388678/video-game-fashion-week. Deadline: By the end of this week, please!
VIDEO GAME FASHION WEEK
Do you spend a lot of time with the character creator tools in video games? Maybe you’re into installing mods so that your Elden Ring hero can look their best? Or you’re embarking on absurd quests in Destiny 2 for the express purpose of getting cuter armor? You might have a pitch for Polygon’s reprisal of one of our favorite theme weeks from 2022: Video Game Fashion Week, the 2023 edition!
There are three styles of story we're looking to include in this package, and that we'd love for you to pitch against:
Features: 1500+ word analysis/research/reported stories that involve interviews with game developers and/or fashion designers about historically or aesthetically significant examples in video game fashion. What do makeup artists think about Bayonetta’s super-powered lipstick? Who designed Alucard’s high collar in Castlevania?
Dress-up darlings: 800 word personal essays about meaningful moments in terms of fashion design in video games and/or cosplay/fashions in real life that have been directly inspired by games. Personal angles and anecdotes encouraged
Curated lists: Rank or rate the best swords, flashiest capes, worst hairstyles, highest heels, and so on.
If you’ve got an idea that’s related to fashion in video games, I definitely want to hear it, even if it’s a bit outside of these prompts.
Assignments will be finalized by the end of June. Here’s the full schedule:
- Today–May 5: Story pitch window
- May 12: Pitches approved/finalized
- June 5: First drafts due
- June 30: All edits wrapped
- July 10: Theme week launch
