Deadline: 12 May 2023
Language, Please is a suite of tools developed by Vox Media focused on training journalists to centralize issues of diversity, equity, and inclusivity at all stages of their editorial process. It comprises three components: in-depth, freely accessible, easily searchable style guidance; interactive and downloadable editorial tools; and a database of third-party inclusivity readers available for contract work.
Vox candidly shepherds audiences through politics and policy, business and pop culture, food, science, and everything else that matters.
Vox is part of Vox Media, the leading modern media company. We guide our audience from discovery to obsession. We inspire essential conversations about what’s now, what’s next, and what’s possible.
As a community of journalists and storytellers, business professionals, creators and technologists, we believe it is a moral and business imperative to amplify voices: to cultivate diversity, equity, and inclusion throughout our organization and media. This applies to our candidates, our teams, our storytelling, our creative work, and our platforms, products, and partnerships.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
Vox Media is looking for a freelance reporter or writer to help create a Religion section of our style guidance. This section will focus on creating guidance that helps content creators and newsrooms make decisions around language usage and terminology, as well as how to incorporate consideration of DE&I issues throughout the content creation process, including story ideation and reporting. These materials are intended to be resources for not just text reporters and editors but also visual, video, and audio journalists, and useful for newsrooms of all sizes and types, including print and digital.
This is a contract role that will conclude in August 2023. Hours per week will vary, depending on the phase of work, but could be up to 20 hours per week. The deadline to submit an application is Friday, May 12th by 5pm ET.
WHAT YOU'LL DO:
- Create thoroughly researched, nuanced, and forward-thinking style guidance around religion-related terminology, ensuring the finished product is comprehensive, follows the Language, Please ethos and style, and adheres strictly to the highest standards of equity and inclusivity
- Help identify external stakeholders who should be given an opportunity to provide feedback on this guidance, working with Vox Media partner managers
- Incorporate edits from both external and internal feedback
- Provide feedback to multimedia producers on translating written style guidance into multimedia training materials
- Assist research team in conducting industry surveys and compiling findings into a white paper, slide deck, or similar deliverable
WHO YOU ARE
What you'll bring:
- At least three years’ experience covering or researching religion, spirituality, and related areas
- Excellent research and writing skills
- Ability to take direction and feedback
- Comfort working independently and adhering to strict deadlines
- Knowledge of institutional barriers that marginalize historically underrepresented groups
- Ability to work in diverse team environments
- Ability and willingness to be an ally to individuals who are different from oneself
- Awareness of and ability to manage own biases, and an understanding of how personal biases may impact storytelling
- Excellent communication skills across varied social and cultural identities
- High levels of empathy and emotional intelligence
To apply, please submit a resume, three relevant writing or research samples, and a one-page cover letter that explains in detail your expertise within the specific issue areas listed and why you are interested in taking part in this project. The deadline to submit an application is Friday, May 12th by 5pm ET.
If you think you have what it takes, but don't meet every single point in our job posting, please apply with a cover letter to let us know how you believe you can bring your unique skills to the Vox Media team or get in touch! We’ve hired chefs who became editors, DJs who became UX designers, and sommeliers who became writers.
