Tea Troutman, Editor at Scalawag, is looking for pitches:
Scalawag has a new call for pitches for electoral coverage from the voices of southern movements.
With the 2024 election, America’s movements from across the political spectrum–far right to far left–will decide the course of the nation’s future.
Fear-mongering campaigns from Democrats and Republicans alike warn of “stark futures” if the other party is elected.
Within this contentious race, campaign platforms lack adequate engagement with the issues our movements continue to research, advocate around, and respond to in the face of increased state abandonment.
Meanwhile, elections strain this capacity, and the elected officials offer no solutions. The Uncommitted Movement and the larger Gaza Solidarity movement—as well as anti-state anarchist movements such as mutual aid responses to COVID and natural disasters—show us that when crisis hits, it is our community and movement infrastructures that heed the call.
In the South, plantation hegemony has only ever been modernized, despite the myths of its overthrow. The abandonment structure here has produced a status quo of limited engagement with the state-as-savior. And so, we turn to Southern movements for analysis on election outcomes and possible futures.
For this reason, Scalawag’s coverage of the 2024 Presidential Election seeks pitches from organizers, advocates, and activists doing influential movement work across the South to reflect on the election.
These reflections may include analyses of the candidates and their campaigns as they relate to Southern places and movements, voter suppression trends, the carceral state, climate catastrophe and the state’s non-response, and more.
These movements include but are not at all limited to:
Reproductive justice, abortion funds & closed clinics
ATL’s Cop City as the template for other Cop Cities nationwide, GILEE and other deadly exchange programs, and southern anti-prison movements
Campus movements, youth repression, and public education advocacy
The StopMVP movement against the Mountain Valley Pipeline, and other land and environmental struggles
Trans advocacy and trans-panic in this year’s election
Abandonment & disaster recovery
Our rates are $.40/word for essays.
