Added 2024-12-18 22:57:41 +0000 UTCCOMPANY/PUBLICATION: THE WRITERS' UNION OF CANADA
Deadline: 13 January 2025
Siobhan O'Connor, Associate Director at The Writers' Union of Canada, is looking for a writer:
The Union is seeking your assistance to expand our Writers’ How-to series. Expressions of interest are due: January 13, 2025. Read on for more details.
GRANTS BOOKLET
The Union is seeking a professional writer to research and write a “How-To” booklet on grants for authors. The booklet should, at a minimum, address:
What a grant is, what grants writers should look for (e.g., grants for writing, residencies, travel, spoken word, grants for Indigenous writers, etc.). While the booklet may provide specific details about Canada Council grants, it is understood that the booklet cannot provide comprehensive details on all grants as this information is available online and is constantly changing.
How to approach various sections of a grant, such as: project description, project plan, advancing artistic practice, who you are as an artist, etc. This should cover the significant sections in a Canada Council and/or Ontario Arts Council writing grant.
Different genres and how that might impact the application.
Support materials – what to include, what not to include.
Budgets – what to include, what not to include.
CV/resume/bio – what to include, what not to include.
Websites – Do you need one? Some granting agencies ask for a website, so is this a requirement or a nice-to-have?
The decision-making and jury process, including an explanation of a rubric and how it is used in the jury process.
How to navigate non-acceptance. How to navigate acceptance (taxes, time away from other work, etc.).
How best to ask for feedback on an unsuccessful grant.
Links to granting agencies that would be relevant to writers (federal, provincial, territorial, municipal, and Access Copyright Foundation).
Definition of relevant terms – may be included separately or included throughout the booklet.
For the ease of reading, the booklet may contain bullets, summary tables (perhaps for listing of granting agencies), and highlight important points.
The booklet should contain quotations from authors who have been part of the granting process as successful applicants and/or jurors.
The booklet should be a minimum of 6,000 words. A thorough outline will be developed in consultation with the Union based on the project description above as noted in the Memorandum of Agreement. The fee for the project will be $4,500. The work is to be completed no later than April 30, 2025.
The successful candidate will:
Be a professional author with experience writing instructional materials.
Have excellent research and writing skills.
Have experience with the jury process as a successful applicant and/or juror.
Please send a cover letter expressing your interest in the project, as well as your related experience and a writing sample (no more than 20 pages), by email to: soconnor@writersunion.ca.
