Al-Bustan is seeking talented reporters to join our News Service team for a six-month Media Fellowship in Reporting. Fellows produce outstanding, original articles for the news site, covering Arab American and Southwest Asian and North African (SWANA) communities in the Greater Philadelphia area.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Submit two timely, engaging and well-written stories (750β1,000 words) per month; stories can cover news, arts, culture, civic life and other topics related to SWANA communities
Work remotely and be able to do in-person reporting on news stories within the Philadelphia area
Monitor news and generate relevant story ideas that include a wide range of subjects, voices and perspectives, highlighting the diversity of SWANA diasporas in the region
Pitch stories to News editor and report on stories assigned by editor
Adhere to Al-Bustanβs editorial standards and AP Stylebook
DURATION AND COMPENSATION
The Fellowship spans six months from the hire date, with the possibility of continued work with the Al-Bustan News Service. Fellows are paid $625 per article, with a maximum compensation of $7,500 for the duration of the fellowship.
REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor's degree (preferred)
Minimum one year of journalistic writing experience and a portfolio of at least three bylined articles Β· Familiar with SWANA communities in Philadelphia region and passionate about news relevant to these communities
Ability to cover news stories within the Philadelphia area in person, including interviewing and taking photographs
Excellent news judgment and ability to identify and pursue local news stories
Familiarity with AP Style Β· Ability to work with an editor, and accept and incorporate revisions to drafts
Ability to work under deadline
Strong editorial judgment
Understanding of journalistic ethics and standards, with a commitment to factual accuracy
Commitment to independent media
Strong communication and organizational skills
Ability to attend periodic meetings at our Philadelphia offices
Applicants must have valid U.S. work authorization and reside in the Philadelphia region.
Fluency in Arabic is a plus, but not required
Work Location: Remote in Philadelphia region

Al-Bustan News is an independent, nonprofit newsroom that produces traditional and multimedia journalism covering issues of importance to Philadelphia's Arab and larger Southwest Asian and North African (SWANA) communities. Al-Bustan News was founded in 2022 by our parent organization, Al Bustan Seeds of Culture, a leading advocate for Arab culture and education. Al-Bustan believes that the voices and perspectives of the SWANA community in Philadelphia and throughout the US are often marginalized and ignored by the mainstream media and government and founded Al-Bustan News to address this issue.
