[Deadline today] Pitches wanted (AI in creative work) | ~$1 per word
Added 2025-05-21 15:19:19 +0000 UTCCOMPANY/PUBLICATION: THE VERGE
Deadline: 21 May 2021
Pitch deadline: Wednesday, 5/21 EOD. First draft deadline Wednesday, 6/4 EOD.
The Verge is looking for stories about the adoption of and resistance to AI in creative work. With the flood of AI tools in the culture ecosystem, we’d like to feature informed, nuanced takes on work that uses, misuses, and pushes back on this technology.
On one side, we’re looking for stories about artists who have updated their processes to incorporate AI in unique ways. That includes generative AI (with some implicit meaning, a surgical approach, or self-awareness), but also we want to see other use cases, like projects where artists augment their workflow by automating specific tasks.
On the other side, we’re looking for stories about people who have evolved their work and creative processes to emphasize and protect the human element of creative work – culture jammers, AI detectors, guardrails defenders, labor-intensive processes, and more.
Here are some examples of what we’re looking for in terms of approach:

These pieces should be reported. We'll want you to speak with your subjects and ideally other key voices in the space.
The rate is a flat project fee of $800, but will work out to roughly $1/word, aiming for 800 words. If you want to write something more complex, let me know in your email.
Pitch deadline is Wednesday, 5/21 by EOD, and the deadline to file will be Monday, 6/4. Email your pitch and a few of your clips to techpitches@theverge.com and put “R/A pitch” in the subject line.
