Classic Doctor Who 1x02 "The Cave of Skulls" full reaction

"It's still a police box. Why hasn't it changed? Dear, dear, how very disturbing."

Here we go!

You can watch the reaction to episode 1x01 here. If I hadn't already watched episode 1 for the 50th anniversary, it would have been paired with this reaction, since I'm following the same format as "The Sarah Jane Adventures", combining two shorter episodes into one reaction video. The next Classic Who reaction will be episodes 3 & 4 together.

Yes, TV of this era definitely had a different "feel" to it, especially where the editing is concerned. It doesn't both me at all. I like watching filmed plays currently! :-)

Very good points. I think 'filmed play' is a very accurate and concise description. The necessarily slower pacing (a lot of which was to allow cameras to move from one side of the set to the other) is a deterrent for a lot of NewWho viewers, who want and expect a zippy pace - but I find that having a knowledge of the restrictive production style of the early 60s enables the viewer to be even more appreciative, because of all the problems they were able to overcome. As the classic series progresses however, the stories get much faster paced (mostly because of the development of video editing).

Great reaction. I re-watched your Unearthly Child reaction too. I know I previously said don't watch the rest of this story, but I'm glad you have (you probably already recorded this anyway). I feel like there is an iconic quality to the very first episode, and it does do the set up really well. The last time I watched the whole thing the rest of it did not impress me but I'm reminded this time how relatively sophisticated the cavemen politics are (I guess that's my bias against 1963 showing). It's funny how many things are there right from the beginning, whether it's the chameleon circuit breaking, the inaccuracy of the TARDIS navigation or even Ian saying "it's alive!". I do really like the companions too. I think Ian and Barbara are a couple of the best throughout the whole of Who. I have a comment about Susan but I'll wait until after this story concludes. Since you've seen Twice Upon a Time I'll be interested to see how you find the First Doctor w.r.t. his attitude to Susan and Barbara. They made him a bit of a caricature sexist as a joke for that special which I don't feel is quite borne out by the show. Sorry, bit of a hobby-horse of mine. Also, having watched An Adventure in Space and Time you'll be aware that because of time & money they had very few edits and so some of these early episodes have a real "filmed play" feel to them. I found it quite shocking the first time. I was expecting cheap effects and shaky sets but the pacing and performances that you get without modern editing feels quite different.

For the first season I agree with those above but would say react to the third story as well. they give some great character development.
