Maya: I think more malayalees are in Texas, Florida states. Almost kerala-like weather in these states. 😊 Not bad in chicago and New Jersey areas too. I lived in Chicago suburbs for 10 years and used to watch a lot of Malayalam movies in a place called Niles just outside downtown. I have seen Melanie (pardesi channel) there too. 😊 There are some pockets in the US where a particular groups tend to cluster. So distributors must know these pockets well.

Abhi

Api: especially in India. That’s not to say malayalis outside don’t support Tamil. You should see the excitement in Middle East for Tamil movies. Pretty sure 50% of the audience are malayalees.

Abhi

Kiru: You are correct about the Malayali associations’ role in bringing New Releases in the US. The larger populations obvi have the larger association membership etc. idk about the size of Malayali population in LA area.. maybe that’s why there aren’t many movies shown in the LA area?

MayaR

you’re talking about Malayalees contributions to Tamil movies in India specifically right? Cuz abroad Tamil movie success is attributed to mostly tamil diaspora

Api

Yeah Api- what I meant is that only. The language speakers (and hence the audience size) is much bigger. Even malayalees contribute immensely to Tamil movie success. But not the other way around. Some promising changes in recent times though. Like Premam making a big impact in TN. But generally tamil audience prefer tamil movies only.

Abhi

It’s not just cuz Tamil Nadu is bigger.. there’s more Tamil people because Tamil is spoken not just in Tamil Nadu but also in Sri Lanka, Malaysia and Singapore. Also, saying this as an Eelam Tamilian, the war in Sri Lanka forced a lot of tamilians to move to other parts of the world and thus are now living in Europe, Canada, Australia, and the US for example. Hence why there’s more screenings for Tamil films around the world

Api

Rightly said. There are not as many Malayalam speakers in the world as Hindi, Telugu or Tamil. Interestingly all these malayalam films are screened here in San Antonio, Korbin. the Malayalee association here made a big splash at the release of this film. The flyer they posted had a long list of cities in the US that the film was playing in. Not sure why its not being distributed in LA.

Kiru

Ishq, Mohabbat, Pyar are all synonyms for love in Hindi and Urdu.

Kiru

The main reason why Malayalam can’t get the distribution is the ratio of Malayalam speakers in any part of the world are way lesser compared to other big industries. Just wanted to make it clear it’s not because Malayalam is an up and coming industry. It’s as old as other industries . If only kerala was as big as TamilNadu, you may have got these films. And most malayalees also watch other language films without any barriers but not the case with other language speakers who primarily watch only their movies. Not generalizing but mostly that’s the case.
