100k Q&A

Thank you to all my lovely Patrons! You get to watch this video 24 hours early! I hope you like it!

It will be up on the channel tomorrow at 16:00. But I have ben meaning to give early access to you guys as a way of saying thank you.

Also, let me know what you would think of a book recommendations series for Patreon where I upload lightly edited videos recommending 5 or so philosophy books on different topics?

Your humility and self deprecation add to your considerable charisma. You, Joe, are key to the success of your platform. You know the material, you present it with passion and pizzazz, and invite your listeners to ponder on what meaning the matters discussed have in their own lives. You got me so reved up about Nietsche that I removed one of his books off my shelf (it's been left there, unread, for years) for my next nighttime book. You're "killing it" as the kids say. Keep killing!

Yes, I would also be interested in hearing your take on Kastrup. I have listened to him many times and recently started reading one of his books.

Very interested in your take on existential alienation and the concept of dissociation. While it may not be appropriate for this channel, (only because it is perhaps too recent to be thoroughly tested) I am curious about your reaction to Bernardo Kastrup’s analytic idealism. Dissociation is an element in his explanation of how it is that we perceive our existence as separate entities, as opposed to the reality of there being only One Thing (my term, not Kastrup’s), that Thing roughly equating to Universal Consciousness. Kastrup uses the example of the various alters found in Dissociative Identity Disorder (multiple personalities) where the alters are perceived as distinct individuals having physical and mental characteristics, many of which are in direct contradiction to the “reality” of other alters (things like blindness in one case, for example.) Perhaps you will discuss Kastrup’s philosophy at some future time. That would be much appreciated.

I love the personal insight, authenticity. No longer the aloof arrogant teenager you describe, but that's a common teenage trait, which unfortunately is not given up by many adults. The yield of a great post secondary education, life experience, and possibly introspection. Your desire to be a good sibling, makes me wish I was in your family when I was a kid. That bizarre nightmare, sounds like your mom over salted dinner, rather than anything. I used to have nightmares about running away from nuns who were looking for me. Actually my daycare was run by nuns, and I escaped. Probably I wanted to be with my mom. Being forced to eat your best friend, likely is the germinal matrix of a future philosopher, come to think of it. Like the way you answered what would you do if your friend became a zombie. Actually a lot of people in this world are metaphorically zombies, the ones who lack curiosity, and forego constant self improvement. (I know, I'm sounding arrogant here, unfortunately at my age I know a lot of adults that are past middle age, and seem stuck in childhood, fortunately my workplace is complete opposite of that, I work with a great bunch of people, and my worst fear would be no longer being able to work). And I agree with loneliness and how suburbia has isolated people, most people just don't even have time for friends or family, everyone in major centers has to work several jobs to make ends meet, or has long commutes. Another reason I love my workplace, I just hang out with my friends, have fun, and I even get paid to do it. Maybe my workplace has become like the community center you describe.

Great video, Joe, awesome getting to know more the person who's been teaching me about philosophy for the past several months, and I would definitely love to see more book recommendations videos, these unscripted videos are super comfy. Hopefully if there's ever another Q&A video I won't sleep on it and sumbit a question of my own as well but in the meantime congratulations again on the 100k milestone, you deserve it.

the goose

Ah nice! If there is interest I'll record the odd one. They'll all be pretty brief and unscripted but I think people might enjoy them!

Joe

I would love book recommendations! Please do

Karolina Niemas

Haha! To be honest I found recording without a script really difficult because I have never done it before, but I hope it comes across alright

Joe

I hope you like it!

Controversial headline, my friend. There's something about your lean in the thumbnail that makes me think you would be ready to philosophize with your fellows at a triclinium.

I’m excited!!!
