I don't think most people do this but instead of shading additively I do it subtractively.  Meaning that in order to visualize light I shade everything, then cut away the places where light would hit the surface.  I don't know how right or wrong that is, but it's the only way I've been able to reliably visualize shadows.

That's cool that you have your own way of doing it. I don't know if anyone else does it that way, I know of at least one artist who did shadows first and then would draw in where the light hit. Gave everything a bold, surreal look.
