Joe Bob’s Thought of the Day: Tingler Edition

If "The Tingler" premiered today, with theater seats rigged with ”Percepto!" shock buzzers, someone would sue William Castle for emotional distress and assault--because we have become a nation of humorless WIMPS.

“The Palace” theater in Yazoo City MS was running its 3rd showing of “The Tingler” (W/ Percepto) on December 31st 1959 … later that night “The Palce” BURNED DOWN . It was likely due in part to the Percepto wiring - as a short circuit fire ended the Palaces run !!! It opened in 1947 and Tex Ritter appeared live in the venues formative days . I personally think the “Witch of Yazoo” may have been partly responsible as well . 🎥🔥🎞

Love me some JB hard truth-telling!

Today people would have to sign a hold harmless agreement in order to enter, like getting surgery.

I mentioned this in the Discord, but they're doing a William Castle double feature in Durham, NC complete with gimmicks. No seat buzzers though. https://carolinatheatre.org/events/film/the-tingler-house-on-haunted-hill/

He's not wrong, though. Castle's penchant for theatrics makes me think back on "Matinee" with John Goodman. Such a good, underrated movie. I bet JB could do some stunts during his road shows, and Diana, your "Brain Surgeon" outfit reminded me of Cathy Moriarty's character.

Couldn't have said it better

hey Darcy! its possible my email ended up in spam cause i checked my outgoing emails, and i wrote one back in january which didnt get answered. if you could search by my email address maybe, it will pop up. orosz-richard@hotmail.com thank you!

I think every time some jerk uses their smartphone in a movie theater, they should get shocked.

No offense taken at all, at least not by me. I definitely agree with you on that.

Spock's "Needs of the many" speech always comes to mind... That used to be our collective mentality, but it has nearly vanished in the maelstrom of 'everyone's opinion matters' social mediastorms... Studios (I'm referring to 'major' studios) are terrified by the slightest public scorn - I can only hope we find a way somehow to re-claim our 'live and let live' culture... If you don't like it, Change the Channel... don't petition to cancel the program... Just my opinion, apologies if I have offended - not my intention...

Thats fair. I imagine there would be plenty of disclaimers preventing a squeaky wheel from ruining it for all. I mean... amusement parks still exist among other things.

More simply put: Our sue-happy culture causes us to miss out on a lot of cool 💩.

One person suing would mean that it would get shut down, though, and the rest of us would just have to go w out. So it’s fair to look at us, as a whole, as “wimps” from that POV,. Many businesses live in fear of litigation, which then erases a lot of the humor from our daily activities, such as going to the movies.

Nah, classic boomer logic. One person suing doesn't represent the masses that would love the gimmick.

He’s not wrong.
