Textless pages are always a joy. I swear though, Sette has so little page time throughout most of this chapter that I forgot how to draw her a few times!

But it was nice to get away from all the red pixels here, if only briefly. Sette gets one good gasp of dawn air and so do we before we're back into the fray.

Huh. These aren't in higher res. Perhaps Patreon doesn't save old photos?

Old Coal Soul

Duane's a person to her now, not a thing, not loot; I doubt any monetary value is weighing very heavily with her. But for once, her obligation to him and her notions of what her own Da would expect of her are both pushing her in the same direction:. She probably wouldn't be able to tell you herself which of those two feelings is stronger. She's still struggling with it, witness her dream. Right now she doesn't need to decide. I bet that's almost a relief. Both sides of that internal conflict are telling her, "Get back in there!" She's not going to get away forever with not choosing. I think she knows it.

I've got no doubt that Sette would have explained saving Duane (after all, he's worth a fortune.) She's rationalized everything else, as you say. I don't think that's true -- she really didn't want him shipped off as cargo -- but I don't think that her motives are completely noble here, even if she's acting because she cares about Duane. Duane is the only person in her life who cares about her in spite of the fact that she's betrayed him, cheated him, lied to him, and just generally treated him like dirt. That kind of feeling feels good, particularly if you know deep down that you don't really deserve it. The only character development here is that she recognizes the fact that being liked is nice. That's not redemption; it's merely proof that she's not a complete sociopath.

I think when she tried to save Stockyard it wasn't for any of those reasons. It was because she saw herself in him. Still self centered, yes, but based on empathy ("he's who I could become, that could be future me!"), a trait almost forbidden by her upbringing that has been slowly emerging in tiny ways since the story began. Looking back, you can see the signs. The first time I noticed was when she revealed herself to Jivi though she didn't have to, only because he was being stupid and hurting himself with how he was holding the knife. Even before that, in her backstory, there was that kid she taught to beg properly. She reconciled that one with the Frummagem code, sure... and has been able to rationalize all her moves in that direction so far. I bet if you asked her right now she'd find a way to claim that going back in is the proper thief-clan thing to do -- but we can see from her expression in that powerful panel 4 and her gesture, touching Duane's bag, that she's really doing it for him because she cares about him. Considering what she's been through in just the past two days, this deliberate decision to charge back into hell is an amazing proof of courage.

True, but Sette trying to save Stockyard is in some way self centered. He could help her escape. She could have extra credits with Nary for savin' Stockyard. Also it seemed more like heat of the moment decision. Now she is safe and eels can't get to her. Her head is clear. But she still decides to go back, and try to save whom she can.

This whole chapter has been a progression of character development for both of the main characters. Duane, originally completely self-absorbed and death seeking, has seen the nature of his own curse and learned that he could end it in a moment. Despite that, he charged back out of the khert back into the day, apparently to save Sette. Sette, originally completely self-centered and greedy first tried to save Stockyard and just now has charged back into the Nevergreen apparently to save Duane.

Not the first time. She's been doing smaller right things here and there. This is a really big right thing, though. I agree that it's a pivotal character moment.

A shamefur dispray!

Danila

I forgot! It's been a while!

TEB

This is the turning point for Sette. I could be wrong, but this is the first time she does the *right* thing.

-Y-

That's her own stuff, see Quiggs' cloak, her dagger and Boo.

Danila

*sigh of deep satisfaction* SO much better in high-res. Thanks for making this possible!

Dierdre

Sette's heartbroken, but it doesn't stop her from collecting the loot!

TEB

I draw the speech bubbles right along with the other lineart. Why waste time drawing things that will just be covered up? :)

Ashley

I don't know much about how a comic is drawn. Is there background and details beneath every speech bubble? Or do you think of the placement while drawing.
