For creating textures, stencils, logos, icons, normal maps, etc, it's important to use a program like Photoshop, GIMP, Paint Net or something similar.

I use Paint Net and I would recommend it to anyone for windows, but I don't know if everyone is using MacOS. I would love to teach Photoshop but it isn't free and I can't...
