All Lemuel really needed was for his pain to be acknowledged. Duane's seen it for himself all this chapter: losing comrades, taking shit from his superiors, excelling in spite of it, getting no credit anyway, feeling utterly abandoned, alone, and forgotten.
Duane can say the right thing, sometimes.
