Documenting basic solutions (Syberia 3 as a case study)

Every now and then I get requests or I just download and try games to see whether they support wider resolutions. Sometimes they don't and the solution is as simple as an aspect ratio change or a launch option, and it doesn't feel right for me to take credit for something as trivial and present it as my own thing. Others do it all the time and it's most of what I see in patchers, but that's just too much.

Conversely, I normally take the findings to PCGamingWiki, documenting them as a step-by-step fixbox like this for Monster High.

The latest example of it is Syberia 3. The game came out in April 2017 and jackfuste dug into its code and provided a solution requiring to change one of the game functions or replace its launcher values in Cheat Engine. Since 2017, it appears to have been the only available solution.

A few days ago I got a request from a user expecting something simpler, so I downloaded the latest GOG version and checked it out. Although jackfuste's Cheat Engine solution did work as intended, I found and described a simple way to achieve the same thing without relying on external tools.

Comments

Sometimes a solution is so easy in implementation but seemingly so hard for people to think of. Occasionally I too fall into the trap in my own way and dive straight into the disassembled game code before trying the common aspect ratio bytes, going over the config files or other native options!

Oh my days, if only all games were as easy as this. Well done!
