Why Carnivals are creepy at night.
Added 2023-04-23 15:58:31 +0000 UTCI've been working on designing the perfect panflute, so I've been getting into 3d printing all sorts of tests and learning how to tune these things.
Temperature matters. A lot. A lot more than I thought.
Enter the carnival organ. These often have percussion effects and mallet instruments that play along with the pipes. But ONLY the pipes are really affected by the temperature change. (the speed of sound in solids doesn't change that much with temperature)
If you perfectly tune the organ at 23 degrees c, and then drop the temperature to 14 degrees c, this is what it sounds like. (in-tune version for reference at the end).
Creepy science!

As a fan of xenharmonic music, IMO the first one is better. :)
