I will never turn down arepas. Arepas are generally South American but the ones I find in New York are usually Venezuelan or Colombian. Arepas are made from ground maize or maize meal and stuffed with a variety of ingredients which can be savory or sweet. My favorite arepa is stuffed with sweet plantains and white cheese.
Some places in New York to check out:
Arepas Cafe
My favorite arepas place. Located in Astoria, it’s a small restaurant and a local community favorite. This is where I get my arepas with sweet plantains and white cheese.
Casa Ora
Not really an arepas place. They have arepitas which are mini arepas under their snacks menu. This is a fancy Venezuelan restaurant with a gorgeous interior. And it happens to be on the Michelin guide this year (and last year). Also notable here are the yucca fries.
Arepa Lady
This is Colombian family owned. They have several locations. I’ve only been to the one at the DeKalb Market in Brooklyn. Though it was good, it was a bit expensive. But the location could be driving up the price since downtown Brooklyn has expensive rent. The ones in Queens might be more affordable.
