Added 2017-05-09 15:39:03 +0000 UTCNow, building your own IDS/IPS may not sound like anything fun except for the most extreme gearheads but has been made pretty easy and is a worthwhile exercise for anyone wanting to see inside the black box that is their network.
The web ui here is pretty easy to understand once you've been shown the ropes. It is very satisfying knowing what is happening on your network at any given time.

You can make one for pretty cheap if you can find the right hardware. I made mine out of an old Stonesoft firewall. 4GB harddrive, 2GB of RAM, 4 ethernet ports.
