The Power Macintosh 4400 (2018)

After six months, the Power Macintosh 9500 video had amassed 3,500 views on YouTube, and now it was time to release a companion video, picking up where the 9500 left off. This was my 9th video, featuring a Macintosh that was almost unknown because of the chaotic times it was released within. I wasn't even aware of it until 2010. Information on this machine is pretty limited, so much of what I talk about came from the machine, the included documentation and the discs.

An opportunity to get one in great condition and in the box for $20 at the end of 2017 made this video a reality. The machine is a window into the Clone and CHRP efforts just before Apple turned its back on them. In the video, I showed how to replace the battery, which did help some viewers get their 4400 running again. I then argue with the bundled software, like "Mouse Skills", "MS Office", "Apple Internet Connection Kit", "Norton Utilities" and discover a copy of "Marathon 2"!

I love my 4400/200! Still re-watch this video from time-to-time, excellent as always.

Always wondered -- and still do -- why the 4400's (and PowerBook 3400's) startup chimes were shorter. It's also interesting that Apple used the G3 machines' reliance upon Mac OS 8 as a way to wiggle out of clone licensing, even though the G3 (on a processor upgrade card) seems perfectly happy running on Mac OS 7.5.3 - 7.6.1.
