Thumbnail Practice Speedpaint

I think the BIGGEST takeaway for me practicing all these thumbnails is that all the supplementary practice I was doing in my free time (practicing lines of action in my sketchbook) has paid off IMMENSELY.

Tracing was definitely something I used to rely on as a crutch when I first begun doing this art stuff but it was always my goal to stop relying on that because...

A. It always makes your drawings look really stiff

B. You don't really learn how to draw anatomy...

I don't think tracing in itself is a criminal act and it once served a purpose for me but I have always wanted to rely less on it and it seems I'm on the right track for that.

Since practicing with line-of-action dot com, Andrew Loomis' "Fun with a pencil" book, and a couple of other books I got from the dump, I have noticed a huge difference!

The books have taught me how to draw guiding lines for anatomy and how to block out shapes with simpler ones first. I had grasped this idea a bit already but combining it with the line of action stuff has made it heaps better. Plus, I'll admit a bad habit of mine is looking at an artist recommended technique and me thinking "pah, I don't need to do that!" and then months later I'm like "yeah actually this is really helpful".

I did spend 7+ hours making these and I think thumbnails should be done much quicker than what I was doing! ;>_> but this was a lot of firsts for me so I understand why it took a bit longer to do haha.

Also, since I have been obsessed with the way Calmdraws does their thumbnailing I practiced their methods with all of the coloured thumbnails and I can really see just how beneficial it is to map out background elements + colour way way way before you commit to a big drawing. So I hope to incorporate thumbnails into my regular practice!

Thanks and enjoy!!
