Itโs more on her position/status. So I think Basen doesnโt like her mostly because Maomao is a servant from the pleasure district and is suspected to be seducing his master ๐

Also add in the stigma and prejudice towards those from the entertainment industry in ancient times, not to mention a brothel - thinking that there might be some seduction and ambition to "climb the ladder" so to speak. These may play in the nature on how Basen treated Maomao at first.

I think Basen's uptight because, being of higher status/position, he just sees Maomao as a servant girl and has trouble giving her the same respect Gaoshun and Jinshi give her. Lakan is a military strategist who uses strategies to get Jinshi to have Maomao to solve things.
