Two things I believe help explain Taylor's character a bit more: Lucinda was young when she had Taylor, so she's trying to act out a young adulthood she never got to experience. Her jealousy and possessiveness when Belly has other friends or hesitates to commit to Steven suggest that her father abandoned her and Lucinda as a child, possibly before she was born. This may have caused her abandonment issues and could also explain her self-destructive tendencies in relationships. No confirmation on the second one, but it would track.
