We've been waiting for everything to line up to make sure this was possible before an announcement. I am happy to say that this is now complete and I can confirm that Team Beef native android ports are moving to OpenXR.
Initially the big advantage is that Team Beef ports will be coming to the Pico 4, so anyone considering that as an alternative to Quest 2 can look forward to playing Doom 3, Jedi Knight and more. We're very excited to see our ports on different hardware. We'll post update when people can expect the ports.
However it doesn't stop there. Moving to OpenXR future-proofs our ports putting us in a good position for upcoming headsets, such as Valve Deckard and Meta Quest 3. Also many thanks to Beef tier patron Stephen Sayles (SlyDog43), for testing the Quest Pro and confirming that the ports already function there in their current state. We are aware that the Oculus Mobile SDK used on the ports is now deprecated but great to see this still supported on this cutting edge hardware. Moving to OpenXR means that if Meta were to stop supporting this old SDK, the ports would live on.
This news will be public today but wanted to share the news first with our patrons, because your support has made a lot of this possible.
We'd also like to say that this does not mean our primary focus is on anything other than the game ports themselves. We've got a lot of things coming shortly for you to enjoy and more announcements after the current port cycle (JKKnight / Bendy / Wrath).
