JKQuest for Jedi Knight: Outcast in-development release

After many many hours of hard graft, Team Beef are proud to present our "Warts and all" in-development-still-so-be-gentle build of JKQuest for Jedi Knight: Outcast.

You will hopefully notice this is a fair bit more polished than the previous release and now allows you to play the game's main campaign.  However, there are definitely still bugs (some game breaking, but this is an in-dev release after all, it is certainly not ready for public consumption yet) and many improvements we wish to make to various aspects of the VR implementation and some to the game-play to make them friendlier for VR.

Warning... there is a game-breaking bug in there that we are aware of, you'll know it when you come to it. However we decided that rather than hold the release up any longer we would get this out and if you do come to it, you can skip past it or wait for the fix in the next build (which won't be far off, literally just days). Besides, it wouldn't really be an in-development build if we just waited until the end and gave you the finished product!

So, on that basis, there was no reason not to share this stage of the process with our patrons (to whom we are incredibly grateful to for your support!).

Also as we mentioned last time, we included all the "Beef Tier" gold patrons in the crawl text credit at the time the release was cut, so once again if your name isn't present our sincerest apologies. We have to take a cut at some point in advance of the release or we would be constantly updating. Please stick around and once this is finished and is a public release your name (and generosity) will be there for everyone to see! (and in the next dev update too if you are still with us)

Furthermore, Team Beef need to extend our thanks and gratitude to MuadDib (who can be found on the Team Beef discord) who has worked tirelessly to implement a very complete menu for this version, so that a lot of the VR specific settings can be adjusted (an earlier iteration was also in the demo build, but this build is far more complete).

What's new?

-------------------

This list isn't comprehensive, but is a taster of some of the nice new stuff in this build:

- Improvements to the appearance and usability of the weapon/force/item selector

- Virtual Screen is now much flatter

- Ensure randomised effects (like lightning) draw the same in both eyes

- Fixed thrown enemy saber just materialising behind you

- Throwable thermal detonators

- Big improvements to CCTV / remote controlled droids

- Improvements to using mounted weapons

- Lots of Menu updates (thanks @MuadDib!)

- Much improved support for left-handed players

- Improvements to the rendering of incomplete models (for now)

- Proper 6DoF in immersive cut-scenes (which are enabled by default, but can be toggled off in the menu)

- Decoupled view angles when using 3rd person saber (introduced 3 turning modes, see menu options)

- Allow force grip to pull and push NPCs to/from you by moving your hand forward or back

- Force crosshair will always draw (unless disabled) and will go purple when highlighting a target-able entity

- Lots of bug fixes!!!

Setup

--------

In order to play this you will need to own the full version of Jedi Knight: Outcast (we would be amazed if any of you don't at this stage!, if not, then please buy it on Steam or another reputable platform).

Install and run the app once on the Quest it will create the necessary folders. You then need to copy the full game PK3 files from your PC install (assets0.pk3, assets1.pk3, assets2.pk3, assets5.pk3) to:

/JKQuest/JK2/base

Don't copy anything from the old demo folder to this folder, as there will likely be issues in differing configuration that will impair your experience.

Mods

---------

You will be pleased to hear that it is also possible to use any mods you like with this build (as long as they work with OpenJK they should work here too), a collection of our favourites or useful ones are listed at the end of this post. Like the demo build, we have decided to also package some mods into this APK (please see the packaged_mods_credits.txt file in the game's folder detailed below for the full credits and readme for each mod giving their authors the appropriate credit for their creation).. On the full public release in the future there will be no mods packaged with the apk and all mods and things like that will be accessible through the companion app.

We have an already fairly comprehensive list of working mods that can be found on the Team Beef discord in the JKQuest #working-mods channel, do check it out!

If you don't want any of the mods we packaged to be copied over (for that true vanilla game) then create an empty file called no_copy in the /base folder and the mods won't be copied on start-up.

In conclusion...

---------------------

We hope you have a lot of fun playing this, please report bugs you find so they can be investigated/fixed, if you are able to provide a save game file to the right point in the game that will help a great deal!

Speaking of which, now that this milestone update is out, dev updates will become more regular (and smaller) fixing issues and adding improvements as we get them done, so stick around as there will be more frequent updates in future.  But for now..

May the force be with you!

Hi new here. is there a post that tells you how to use the .apk file or how to access the port?

Omg they torture you on the way to the light sabor. Feel like the first 2 chapters are long and not fun lol. But overall thanks this port is great and once you get the light sabor and the force 10/10.

Did you follow the instructions and copy the files from the main game across?

The game crashes we need help

The game crashes as soon as it starts. What am I doing wrong

Excited to see what’s to come

I'm so excited to play this game but i only have the Pico 4. I hope for future release.

Keep an eye out for the next release.... coming pretty soon ;-)

I definitely feel like using force push and pull in combat is difficult to apply. The reticle is so difficult to see, and the area of effect is so small. Considering the nature of aiming in VR versus PC aiming, I would love to see this tweaked.

Ok cool! Thanks for the response!

In the menu there's an option to increase movement speed to the normal game speed.. it is slowed by default as it is uncomfortably fast in VR. We are looking at a way to make it activate on a button push so it doesn't require going into the menu

I have the same problem.

All in all the is an amazing vr port!!!

Maybe I just stink at gaming but it seems like the force speed is too slow to get over the moving platform that moves side to side over some water in the Yavin training level.

Check out Vrans video as an instruction guide (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rS3uvUUrk88). Only one mistake there is he says you need to be connected via Link. It'll work via Link but just being connected via USB is enough. Once you've done it once it really isn't difficult. A small learning curve but really only a couple of steps. When you know how it takes about 30 seconds

Uggg I don't know if I'm tech savvy enough to install all the extra stuff. Installing the app worked for me fine in the demo

Just made it past the turret section, if you use the selection menu slow and spin yourself around you can align yourself with the barrel nearly every time
