The work is dangerous and the combatants are no stranger to the results of the dangerous work

For the most part the combatants will witness another's demise right in front of them before their own...if that happens.

Loud thuds and moans as BDR catches a squad mates body. The unceremonious, inglorious demise of a hire gun no one really cares about.

They may have seen this at the other end of their rifle, the "other" going down eyes

crunched tight as they crash into the floor. It might hit home with them. This is evil.

The ORC is powerful on its own. They can't deny their orders. But optimism bias plays into the Combat units psychology......alot.

The consistent witnessing of expenditures brings about mixed feelings. If they get put on equipment recovery detail then the physical contact may trigger some sort of empathy however ORC is designed to have a "commodity" type emotional response similar to resource gathering (dopamine associate with money). Likewise after some time, they too begin to see themselves as a commodity.

There is not innocence with any combat unit, BFC, CPD, Zuvic, KTS or other. They're there to inflict their employers will.

The companies or "factions" made Mallera-9 the hell hole of violence it is. Greed got the better of everyone. The Mistress and Caterina let their greed consume them. The Combatants joined out of greed for more, succumbing to the promise of more only to pay with everything

So what happens when a unit gets expended? Nothing. The second they sign their name to a contact, their tainted. Either getting shot up in some sort of insane "ego" battle between The Mistress or Caterina, or getting dragged into the mouth of an interdimensional abomination, or sinking into liquid earth. No one cares, not even them. Everyone's view point is they deserve it.
