Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (2001) - The Making of the President

Two years have passed since the crisis at Shadow Moses. Snake and Otacon think that they can become members of the professional managerial class if their fledgling anti-Metal Gear NGO, Philanthropy, takes off. But in their quest to get some pictures that will convince Alex Soros to give them $10 million, they run into a different type of PMC: the Gurlukovich Mercenaries and Revolver Ocelot.

Yes, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty marks the start of the infamous "arm subplot." But it's also a technological marvel that pushed past the PS2's limits, a clinic on level design, and you can call Otacon while Snake is jacking off within the first 10 minutes of gameplay. You simply cannot name a single better work of fiction that contains both a multigenerational diarrhea curse and a multigenerational pants-wetting curse.

You've seen video essays on this game called things like "Metal Gear Solid 2: Wallhugging In Plato's Cave." Guess what: it's time to throw that loot of narrative distinance (?) shit in the TRASH! This is the ONLY valid interpretation of this game ANYWHERE. Fake your death, check your rations for disgusting sea insects, and present your genitalia to President James Johnson. From this day forth, we are the Uncs of Liberty.

Art by Josh Lynch. Theme song by Brendan James, inspired by the work of Tappi Iwase, Kazuki Muraoka and Norihiko Hibino.

[Last episode being a live drop was an accident. I will never do that shit again.]

That fucking perfidious russian dutch doctor GOT AWAY AGAIN

The presentation of the whole Arsenal Gear surreal part fucking rules so hard. Would watch a whole movie with that vibe

In regards to Kojima regretting killing off Liquid, I think he learned his lesson by leaving Higgs fate in DS ambiguous because, oh boy, Higgs came back in DS2 better and crazier than ever

Michael Adams

I just wanna say that Brendan is very good at doing the voices

Emma using Mac’s argument against evolution in Always Sunny

Finally getting around to this, but this is probably my favorite video game of all time. Its the one, other than Phantom Pain, I love replaying the most.

The first Metal Gear game I ever played, also one that nobody really liked after it came out. Given I didn’t have any nostalgia of MGS1 going in I thought it was great. Holy shit though the Rose and Jack soap opera every time I tried to save was hell on earth. First time I was acquainted with Kojima story telling.

Lmao the Eric Adams impression being so subtle but so spot on at the end of the episode had me rolling

Aaron Friedland

Nastasha. Not Natasha.

Arthur G. Pym

This series is so good

I’ve never played this game, but have listened to the episodes multiple times. I can’t explain it. You guys are great together—great storytellers. This from someone who’s played only 8 bit Nintendo with any consistency. Looking forward to more

The way Felix says the ocelot liquid arm thing is "kind of indefensible" while still defending it had me laughing out loud

Ryan

What if instead of a double helix it was a double Felix?

Kevin

I kinda love ocelot calling other people dramatic while being sassy as hell, cuz while it can def be bad writing, it feels more like the actual projection real people do Also insane no one else seems to struggle with the button mashing sequences? In both games they killed me
