528 - Pacific Nights (5/31/21)

The boys spend their last night in LA sitting around the fire pit, gazing at the Pacific Ocean, talking about animals and riffing about the dang politics.

Wokeness is really just embracing our tribal nature, it's a rebellion against politically correct liberalism. Everyone is racist, try to work on it, but don't beat yourself up too much about it: That's Critical Race Theory. And yes, class and antisemitism are both axes of oppression.

Andrew Criscione

The real academics behind Critical Race Theory are kind of sitting back amused watching the culture war play out, because the entire intention of it was to drop the postwar taboo against discussing race, and it resulted in some sort of wild multidirectional cancel culture pogrom that no one can control. At the end of it, if we can make jokes again, the original authors of Critical Race Theory will have actually achieved their goal.

One of my favorite things about this podcast is the Zevon love. Truly the greatest, and a legend of LA.

"Akhi" is "my brother" in Arabic, with the "i" being the "my". It is often shortened casually to "Akh". I think chopped cheese might come from Arab Muslims in NYC.

+1 to all of this. If you limit the people who can stay in campaigns to the independently wealthy or people using it as a stepping stone, that means those people end up dominating the campaign infrastructure. The Republicans have this figured out - they have a pipeline that takes you from college activist, to campaign worker, to think tank leech. Meanwhile we think people should give of themselves for the cause.

I appreciate the animal stories. We have spent too much time ignoring and suppress our connection to the natural world. We cant ignore it. The sancturaries are both joyful and sorrowful. The animals are amazing, but humans have done wrong by those animals. Being in nature or with animals is where I still feel alive and happy.

I came here to say the same. Even when a campaign is small, a regional union can represent many campaign workers from different campaigns and force progressive campaigns to hire unionized workers. If campaign work conditions and pay are shit, it will continue to only be people from more privileged backgrounds that work on campaigns who don't need a living wage. Some good takes here on recent coverage about the Morales campaign and the Bernie 2020 campaign failing to live up to its CBA contract: https://www.mechanicalfreak.website/podcast/episodes/grim-dark https://www.mechanicalfreak.website/podcast/episodes/from-the-vault-when-cassidy-went-down-to-iowa

Love Chapo, long time listener. Their campaign union takes are complete dogshit. Many decent folks work in terrible campaign environments where, without a union, they get abused or pushed to the brink with no protection or recourse. “Stepping stone” or not, pay sucks and it’s your only source of income because at peak season it takes every waking hour. A good contract should be the starting place of any employment. If you’re trying to make things better you can’t hire at-will labor.

TrueAnon 163 is that a way ^^^^^^^^
