I think they got the Ukraine war wrong. The Russians did try to scare Ukraine into capitulating early in the war. Who doesn’t like a short war? Better than it is now where Europe is going to be freeze to death and hundreds of thousands of Ukranians died for nothing and Ukraine will be carved up like a Thanksgiving turkey into a rump state land locked and zero prospects even if it joins the EU

im gonna do a huge brain whataboutism here but: was the holodomor less of an intentional famine than the bengal, or the irish famine, or was the ukraine famine in particular just a resource allocation boo boo while the other two were intentional, or is it like a sliding scale thing?

The Soviet Famine of 1932, by pretty broad consensus of modern academics who focus on the subject, is no longer considered a deliberate act. The releasing of the Soviet archives caused historians to revise their theories that the Bolsheviks aimed to inflict mass death and starvation among the semi-capitalistic independent farmers of the regions Dolan mentions. Of course, reputable academic types never believed that the Holodomor was a genocide against ethnic Ukrainians only, for the simple fact (which Dolan correctly points out) that millions died of the famine in regions without ethnic Ukrainians like Kazakhstan and Russia itself. What Dolan gets very wrong is that the Soviets deliberately killed these millions for political and economic reasons: to cement their rule and wipe out this emerging rural class of wealthier farmers that posed a perceived challenge against the Soviet system. On the contrary, most reputable historians now believe that the mass death in these regions was not a crime of malice, but a failure of distribution and government policy (ie poorly implemented farm collectivization and excessive agricultural quotas that the Soviet planners’ supply chain did not adequately redistribute back to their producers). While some scholars do believe the mass death could be considered a crime against humanity they still largely agree that it was a crime of incompetence and not deliberate (which is why it’s not a genocide).
