Movie Mindset 13 - You’re All FREAKS!!!: Disease, Death and Vincent Price feat. Theda Hammel

Will & Hesse are joined by Nymphowars’ Theda Hammel to discuss two horror films from 1964 starring the legend Vincent Price: Sidney Salkow’s “The Last Man on Earth” & Roger Corman’s “The Masque of the Red Death”. Both deal with the end of the world in their own way and highlight Price’s unique combination of campiness and dramatic heft for both comedic and horrifying effects.

Yet more reasons to love Vincent Price: his son V.B. Price was/is a much-beloved presence in the New Mexico journalism and letters scene, having written a column for Albuquerque's less-reactionary daily paper for decades, along with a lot of other writing. Seems like a truly great dude. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/V._B._Price

love this ep, i talk to my cats in vincent price voice all the time

Greasy_Jones

Never in a thousand years did I think I'd be wanting to rewatch Vincent Price movies, but goddamn movie mindset is real. Revive Sneak Previews w Will and Hesse!

MB Szes

Theda is an absolute riot. What fun.

Robby Gross

My two favourite Vincent Price movies

Tommy

You guys should review the Soviet horror film Viy :)

dan

These are so much fun

Don Friðrik Ólafsson

Thanks for doing this run of episodes—it’s been a much needed and enjoyable diversion so far

Will has a very literary way of speaking that gives his retellings a real sense of narrative movement. His insights give the viewer a kind of syllabus to study the film on their own, but under guidance. It’s that style that makes the chapo reading series so good: you feeling like you’re picking on the author with him.

I feel like there's too much sublimation at work with Spielberg. The IRL sickos can only purge the bile by really doing it. Talentlessness kills.

Jason Matthews

Will has become my favorite movie reviewer. His enthusiasm for such a wide variety of movie genres is so infectious. Hesse is great in the podcast too but Will is the one who really makes me want to watch some of these movies

Jimmy McMillan

Poltergeist also has a somewhat sexual style mom who gets raped by a ghost in her underwear. Spielberg has to be a sicko right? Is his death going to be a Jimmy Savile situation where it turns out he had the temple of doom under his house?

I am become reply guy

My grandfather loved Vincent Price, thought he was "a hoot."

NoPrefect

great episode. i love hessa and willA's vincent price so much. i went and subscribed to nymphowars strictly to have theda's laughter as a regular part of my life going forward

Eon Gattignolo

Jane Asher was also in The Stone Tape, written by Quatermass author Nigel Kneal, well worth a watch if you havent already seen it.

philfinn

Theatre of Blood, and of course Dr Phibes are wonderful late Vincent vehicles. They feel post-Targets, chastened, with decline as their primary subject. The London of Theatre is viscerally clammy, rain slicked, derelict and mouldy, almost in the vein of Ramsey Campbell.

Jason Matthews

yes let us not rush to erase the chaotic bi due to different times!

Shivvy

All 3 of you give great Vincent, I’m living for it. My takeaway (besides more bright red blood) is probably Will’s observation, “they were having fun in the 60s”

Shivvy

Hesse: “This movie is CRAZY!”

Ekaterina Sedia

Can we get Cameron on one of these please please

jawn carpenter

So, the last man on earth is just staying positive in the apocalypse with worse production values

William

Just occurred to me that Hal Hartley would be a great ep for a future movie mindset (non horror albeit)

Tim Holland

He started out in mainstream movies like the film noir “Laura” and the Western “The Baron of Arizona”

Erik Weissengruber

Beckett wrote Krapp’s Last Tape for his voice.

Erik Weissengruber

Was this the inspiration for desperate living?

Dennis Lyons

when will busted that out 💀

Dennis

Interesting story about Price was Dennis Hopper first meeting him at Martha’s Vineyard in the early’60’s and being impressed by the sizable Modern Art collection he had and apparently sparking Hopper’s interest in collecting

Zach H.

I'd appreciate a new Patreon tier that's just Will and Hesse talking in their Vincent Price voices

Tim O'

Price had three wives and two children so I reckon he was a classic chaotic bisexual and probably would’ve married a few dudes in-between wives if he’d had the chance, reminds me of when I found out that Baz Lurhmann is married to a woman and has two children it makes no sense and yet…

Adam Foster

Great episode! If anyone wants more of Vincent Price camping it up in a series of fancy outfits I highly recommend Theater of Blood. Price plays a much maligned actor who takes revenge on his critics by killing them in Shakespeare themed death traps.

Andrew McClure

I appreciate the standard chapo news coverage but also at the current fever pitch really appreciate this pause. Also hesse referencing “choke on it” reminded me of Matt referencing that in one of his most recent eps 🥺❤️‍🩹

Blank

I know your pain 🥺

Blank

I am utterly charmed by Theda

emalco

Watching masque of the red death gave me ptsd flashbacks of the Ambrosio scenes from playing Immortality

Joey Fazzoli

I'm with Theda 100% and prefer the slightly spooky drive home with some light ghoul pushing to the anxiety attack I had watching Infinity Pool.

Tristan Clark

Oink!

TentInQuarantine0

damn Spielberg just like me fr

Fingerless

I want to hear you guys review Caligula

Owen

Richard Mattheson is such a kickass writer. He turned out genre defining work but never reached the notoriety of Poe, Lovecraft, Jackson, and King though he certainly earned it. One of the best to ever do it and modern horror owes him so much. Dead heat between Poe and Jackson for best American horror writer but without Mattheson the genre from the midcentury on wouldn’t be what it is. Necessary dude. If anyone hasn’t read him, you should. You *will* find something cool.

Billiam

We don't like Mike Flanagan????

Dustin Nelson

Somethings are boring in an interesting way. Somethings are boring in a boring way. Simple as.

safetyconesavior

Sewwweeeeeee

K H

Hesse’s voices in this has me rolling with laughter

Char Kelly

Will, did you really not enjoy Midnight Mass? I appreciate a lot of what you pick, but calling that boring while touting a movie where Vincent Price narrates his shopping for an hour? Love you, do not understand you.

TentInQuarantine0

Trying the B&W first

Dustin Nelson

Did we do the Black and White or In-Color "Last Man On Earth (1964)? I'm not starting the episode till I see it to avoid spoils

Dustin Nelson

No, sorry, never going to do that.

Will Menaker

This episode is so much fun! Theda is a delightful guest, and Vincent Price is such an excellent focus.

Michelle Lambing

delightful

Karl Childers

By no means am I a cinema sins type viewer but WHY is there still fresh garlic 3 years into the apocalypse? Figured he’d start a farm for that shit

Matt Boi

"At 2pm in Italy every single person falls to the ground limp for an hour" I mean, this is basically true

Mark Brian Wilson

MARAT/SADE is a great movie and Patrick Magee was an incredible actor

Michael S. Judge

loving this

Shawn Hayes

Will, I know you have a lot to manage sometimes... but, please, let your co-hosts, and especially your guests, finish their thoughts!! This rocked, Theda was so fun, thanks y'all!<3 <3 <3

Callie Bonds

You see, I was bitten by a vampire bat when I was in Panamá for some ssssexual tourism

Michael S. Judge

Theda!! For the flyover country

Fadi Awadalla

thank you for mentioning vincent price's dramatic heft in the description. campy was his flavor but that motherfucker can act.

Eon Gattignolo

Vincent Price flouncing around the ballroom in anguish as he’s surrounded by red-dead hands is an all-timer scene
