My mom comes from a large Catholic and part Irish family. She was born in 1963, before the assassination, and would’ve been named John if she was a boy. That honor went to my uncle John (middle name Fitzgerald) the following year. My mom also jokes sometimes that she “knew Jackie Kennedy” growing up because there was a Kennedy family in their town who of course named their daughter Jacqueline.

There’s a great book, “Kennedy Versus Lodge: The 1952 Massachusetts Senate Race” on the topic. At some point Kennedy ally Joe McCarthy was reluctantly forced to campaign for Lodge who also didn’t like McCarthy and his wing.

The "joke" being that protestants, especially Scottish ones, are just as moronic and regressive as the most obsessive papists It's frustrating because without a doubt the catholic church is one of the most regressive institutions on the planet that has inflicted an untold degree of suffering in its existence, but that's by and large not the fault of individual lay catholics
